Turn Your Passion for Helping Others into a Professional Counselling Career

Start gaining the skills, confidence, and certification you need with a certificate in psychodynamic counselling theory and skills

Counselling training programmes that lead to qualification

Certificate in Psychodynamic Counselling Theory and Skills

Year 1, part time.

A preparatory level course covering basic psychodynamic counselling theory and skills. It is suitable for those wishing to enhance their people & relationship skills, or who are considering further study or entry onto a CCS’ BACP accredited Diploma course. The Certificate course alone does not qualify students for working with clients seeking counselling; for that students would need to progress onto a CCS’ Diploma course.

Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling (Psychodynamic)

2 Years part time. Constitutes a Diploma when combined with the Certificate course.

A BACP Accredited training that provides students with a broad conceptual background in counselling using a combined academic and experiential approach, based on the psychodynamic model, and to a standard adequate to supervised practice with clients seeking counselling, leading to later development of the counsellor to becoming an independent, registered professional.

How much does it cost?

Fees and Funding
Certificate and Diploma course fees cover all training and group work, Saturday workshops, individual tutorials, supervision and professional indemnity insurance.

There is a one-off administration fee of £60, payable at the time of application to cover the cost of processing your application.

For fees, please refer to the Prospectus.  Fees are revised annually.

A deposit equivalent to one third of the course fee is payable upon acceptance of a training contract.

The balance of fees is due prior to starting the course.  There is an option for the remaining fee (after paying the deposit) to be made by monthly standing order over 6 months starting in October and ending in March, incurring an administration charge of £100 (which is added to the monthly standing order amount).

Students who are sponsored by an employer are asked to pay each full year’s fees in advance.

Why train with us?

Chichester Counselling provides a safe, secure environment for you to develop your skills and understanding as a counsellor and be introduced into the fascinating and demanding world of client work. You will learn about yourself and other people. For many students, training as a counsellor can be a life-changing experience.

As one of our students you will belong to a professional counselling organisation. This offers you the opportunity to work alongside a mutually supportive group of counsellors who are at different stages of their career development.

Our training package includes theory and skills sessions, client work and supervision. We will assess and select clients for you and you will be supported by weekly supervision.

Our Diploma training course is accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

Both the Certificate and Diploma courses follow the academic year and run from late September to early July of the following year.

Please email: training.coordinator@ccs-counselling.org.uk to register your interest for courses running from September 2025.

What makes us special

We specialise in

psychodynamic counselling

Psychodynamic therapy places a particular focus on the client’s early relationships and experiences and the ways that these can continue to have an impact in adult life – often leading to repeating patterns of difficulty, in relationships or at work, for example. For some clients, these difficulties also make themselves known as depression or anxiety. Psychodynamic counselling aims to bring to the surface and make sense of thoughts, feelings and patterns that the client may not previously have been aware of, because they were unconscious.

Psychodynamic counselling also pays particular attention to the therapeutic relationship, what goes on between the client and the counsellor, and sees this as both an important source of information about the client’s experiences and the starting point for real therapeutic change and growth. By working with the therapeutic relationship in this way, psychodynamic counselling can offer clients a new way of understanding themselves and relating to other people.
